Religious Upbringings in Adolescents

I’m not sure how many of you are religious in any sort of way, but to those who are, I’d like to talk about how religious upbringings can affect adolescents both positively and negatively.

Religion is a sort of framework for how you will live your life. It can provide solace for some wondering about their place in the universe. For adolescents trying to figure out where they stand is quite possibly the most demanding and taxing thoughts you may ever have. So for most religions it is almost a guide. There are good and bad, blessings and consequences. However a similarity in all of them is the justice that is being served. We wait for a day when our deeds may be judged in front of a higher being. Will I be prepared for Judgment day, the second coming, Rosh Hashanah or whatever you may believe.

But these are the thoughts that may plague the mind of a young religious adolescent. Though I don’t think the religions themselves are problematic, I strongly believe that the people involved in the religion will shape them. It will shape how they choose to view the religion. I’m saying this because I know some adults judge children like they are going to be sat next to whatever higher being there is during judgment day and that can be painful because being around people who believe in the things you do is supposed to be comforting, its supposed to give you peace. However some use fear and shame to teach and wonder why they stop attending their place of worship.

I’ve also noticed the discouragement of independent thinking in religion. People tend to make it seem like being curious about other things is against the Lord and that you’re Satan’s child. Its normal to wonder about things beyond your original beliefs because those beliefs are likely not your own. They were sprung onto you as a child and wondering what laid beyond it was hushed and looked down upon. So I encourage you to think those thoughts because we are all human, you’re not evil or despicable for choosing to open a new door but make sure that door gives you peace and truth.

I hope you find your truth, peace and love and thank you so so much for reading.
