Dozens gathered on May 4, 2019 at the Glengarry Trails in Alexandria for the 3rd annual Trees for Tomorrow event to plant 200 trees in memory of loved ones who passed this year.

David MacDonald, Munro & Morris Funeral Homes Manager/Funeral Director, approached the RRCA 3 years ago to jointly host an annual memorial tree planting day for the community.  “After someone has passed away, a tree can represent rebirth and a living tribute to their loved one that will last many lifetimes,” says MacDonald.

The Township of North Glengarry is proud to partner on this initiative; the tree planting has taken place on their land on Lakeshore Drive in Alexandria.  “This lasting tribute, which honours loved ones who have passed away in the past year, will help to create a legacy that will be enjoyed by many future generations of our residents,” said North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald.

The trees are sourced and selected by the RRCA who also guide the tree planting event.  “There are various open fields at or near the Glengarry Trails.  Every year, we determine which trees are most suitable for each site based on the drainage and soil type and guide the participants on how and where to plant the trees,” says Normand Génier, RRCA Forestry Specialist.

Memorial tree planting events bring families and the community together who may find comfort in one another.  “The trees serve as a living legacy for generations to come while making a positive environmental impact,” adds MacDonald.

For those who would like to plant trees on their own property, trees can be ordered from the RRCA under their Tree Seedling Program for spring 2020.  For more information, contact Normand Génier, Forestry Specialist, (613) 938-3611 ext. 228, normand.genier@rrca.on.ca.
