LTE: Canada Needs to Formally Apologize

One can only image the harm that was caused, to Canada and the Ukraine, on Friday, during the visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.  To be honest I don’t think many Canadians care where the fault is to be placed – whether it is the Speaker’s fault or that of the government.  What now is the fault, as this continues, is the insult to injury caused by the Prime Minister.

Monday and Tuesday the Prime Minister has not attended the House of Commons.  He has only made brief statements, to reporters, in the halls of our center of government and yet he has not made a formal apology, to Canadians or the world for this incredulous blunder.  With his lack of statement, he is merely adding to the continued embarrassment that has been caused.

With the Prime Minister not being the Head of State, for Canada, he is still the head of the government.  Canada’s Head of State position is held by the Governor General.  If our Prime Minister will not step up it should surely rest with the Governor General to make the statement of apology, not only to the people of Ukraine, but to Canadians and our Veterans, the Jewish Community, the Polish government and all of the people, world-wide, who were witness to, and who have been harmed by, this travesty.

This should have been done immediately, as this is something Canada’s Prime Minister should have done on the next day – it has not.  Therefore, for the sake of Canada the Governor General should rise to this most important occasion, to ensure the people of this World realize that Canada and Canadians are just as wounded as they are by this most unfortunate incident.

Anything else is merely adding insult to injury and after last Friday’s display we owe it to our allies and all people to correct this wrong.
