In a significant step toward the upcoming Ontario election, Jeremy Rose has been officially nominated as the SDSG NDP candidate following a well-attended virtual nomination meeting tonight.
Rose, a unionized postal worker and community advocate, was introduced by Ginette Guy Mayer, who praised his deep roots in Cornwall and his commitment to social justice. A motion to nominate Rose was put forth and seconded without opposition. When the vote was called, Rose received unanimous support from NDP members in good standing, officially confirming his candidacy.
The odds may not be in his favour, but Jeremy Rose isn’t backing down. As the NDP’s candidate for Stormont–Dundas–South Glengarry (SDSG), he’s well aware of the challenge ahead.
Progressive Conservative Nolan Quinn secured a landslide victory in the last provincial election, beating the second-place Liberal candidate by nearly 40% of the popular vote. SDSG, along with Leeds–Grenville–Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, and Renfrew–Nipissing–Pembroke, remains a stronghold for the PCs—making it an uphill battle for any non-Conservative contender.
But Rose is ready to fight.
Candidate’s Vision for SDSG
In his speech, Jeremy Rose shared his personal journey, highlighting his background as a Cornwall native raised in a socially conscious household . He spoke passionately about his labour advocacy work, his alignment with NDP values, and his dedication to progressive policies .
His campaign will focus on key issues such as:
- Affordable housing & cost of living: Strengthening rent control and tenant protections to prevent further crises.
- Healthcare reform: Opposing privatization and ensuring better access to services.
- Education investment: Advocating for public school funding and supporting teachers.
- Holding the Ford government accountable for policy failures that have impacted Ontarians.
Engaging with the Community
The meeting also featured a question-and-answer session, where Rose addressed concerns ranging from homelessness to bilingualism. He reaffirmed his commitment to tackling corporate greed, standing with unions, and making life more affordable for everyday people .
When asked what inspired him to enter politics, he answered that labour struggles and government indifference were key motivators for stepping up and seeking change.
Rose’s dedication and vision resonated with attendees. He expressed deep concern about rising homelessness, pointing to corporate greed, absentee landlords, and insufficient tenant protections as key issues. Phyllis Sarault declared her full support of his stance on the issue of homelessness, and Jacqueline Milner commended his willingness to juggle travel demands between Cornwall and Toronto.
