Despite the July 3rd heat wave, the Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA), in partnership with the Ontario Power Generation, the City of Cornwall, and the St. Lawrence River Institute, hosted its 25th Annual Family Fishing Afternoon at Gray’s Creek Conservation Area. The event, which gives families an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors together, is held each year during Ontario’s license-free fishing week.
“Whether participants are casting a line for the first time or returning as experienced young anglers, the event offers a fun and educational way to connect with nature and learn more about the fish that inhabit our local waterways,” says Claudia Munafo, RRCA’s Public Information Coordinator.
At the RRCA station, staff identified the day’s catches, measured the fish for the children’s competition, and separated harmful invasive species for humane disposal. Experienced anglers from the Cornwall Lunker Club were also on hand to provide fishing tips and guidance, while The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters’ TackleShare Program supplied fishing equipment for participants who did not have their own gear.
Participants, aged 16 and under, competed in several categories. The 2026 winners were:
Longest Fish: Caleb Lasaga, Largemouth Bass, 410 mm
Second Longest Fish (tie): Zach Jacobs and Aliyah Mainville, Yellow Perch, 210 mm
Smallest Fish: Liam Lapierre, Round Goby, 70 mm
Most Fish Caught: Mason Lucas, 20 fish
Families can continue to enjoy fishing through the RRCA’s free TackleShare program. Equipment can be borrowed for up to one week from the marina office at Gray’s Creek Conservation Area during operating hours. For more information, visit rrca.on.ca/marina
