There is Strength in the Fight

When I heard about Lee’s cancer diagnosis, I felt sick to my stomach. The weight of it hit me much harder than I expected.

We’re not close, but he’s always been a rock—a pillar in our community, someone who’s mentored so many of us, quietly and without any fanfare, without even knowing it, really. To think of him facing such a battle was gut-wrenching. But what struck me even more than the diagnosis was his reaction to it. He didn’t dwell on the unfairness of it, or spiral into anger and sadness. Instead, he accepted the challenge with grace and determination, refusing to let it define him.

This man, who has given so much of himself to others, didn’t retreat into isolation. Even while facing his own health struggles, he continues to mentor, to give, to inspire. It’s incredible to witness his strength, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. He reminds me every day what it means to live with purpose, to give of yourself despite the obstacles life throws in your way.

His humility and courage has forced me to reflect on my own life. How often do I take things for granted? How often do I let small irritations or disappointments consume more of my energy than they deserve? In contrast, Lee is facing the fight of his life and continues to move forward with positivity and wisdom.

I’m reminded that life is fragile. We aren’t guaranteed tomorrow, and this stark reality is easy to forget in the hustle of our day-to-day routines. Lee’s refusal to give in to defeat has inspired me to seize the day more fully. To be more grateful for what I have, rather than focusing on what I don’t. To stop putting off joy, stop waiting for the ‘right time’ to do things that bring me happiness and fulfillment. The time is now. And to work harder on my path to health.

His journey reminds me of the power of resilience. He’s taught me that even in our darkest moments, we can choose to rise. We can choose to keep contributing, keep mentoring, keep loving—despite the fear, despite the pain.

There’s another part of his story that stands out to me—his role as a father. In the midst of his battle, he’s not just fighting for himself. He’s fighting to set a powerful example for his daughter. She looks up to him, and through his strength, she’s learning firsthand what it means to face adversity with grace. He’s showing her that even in the hardest times, we can still live fully, love deeply, and keep contributing to the world around us.

As parents, we hope to guide our children through life, showing them how to handle both success and hardship. Lee is doing just that, showing his daughter that courage is not the absence of fear but the determination to keep going, no matter what. We can continue to be a force for good, and we can still be present for those we love.

I don’t need to wonder about the outcome of his fight, because I already see him winning—through his strength, resilience, and the love he spreads. His spirit remains unshaken, and his refusal to give in shows everyone around him that he’s not just fighting—he’s conquering.

Thank you Lee, for being you. I hope you won’t mind that I shared part of your story.

You can help Lee’s recovery by donating to his gofundme campaign. This will ensure that Lee can focus on his healing by easing the financial pressure that comes with illness. Please donate generously. Your donation, no matter how big or small, will make a difference in Lee’s journey to recovery. https://www.gofundme.com/f/lee-theodore-time-to-support-him-in-his-healing
