Sisters for Life is tiny but mighty team of seven family and friends who have a very personal commitment to doing what they can to make life better for our community members living with cancer.

The team started fundraising in 2013 as a Relay for Life Team. For years, they gathered pledges and walked the track at various Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life events in the area. Over the years, the team has looked for innovative and fun ways to engage with the local communities and increase the funds raised.

The team’s premiere event is their Ladies Night Gala – this year the “Snowflake Ball” takes place in the Finch Community Centre on the evening of November 14th. This Gala is a much-anticipated event and brings the team’s very supportive community together year after year. It offers a beautifully decorated venue, a very popular silent auction, professional DJ (DJ Shellshock – Sheldon and Mai-Liis) and photographer. Most importantly, these ladies come together for a night with their gal pals to have fun while supporting a cause that is near and dear to all their hearts – the opportunity to “Party with a Purpose”.

We do not take this lightly. These women – many of whom have been with us for multiple Galas – put their trust in us.

They put their trust in us to select charities and organizations that are going to support those in our community living with cancer.

At the same time, they trust us to provide an evening that will touch their heart, inspire their mind, and put a smile on their face.

Our ladies walk out the door with a glow – a glow that is created by hope, great company and an opportunity for supporters to come together to “party with a purpose”.

Team members are quick to acknowledge that behind the scenes there is an amazing group of volunteers affectionately known as (Sisters & Misters at Large) who give countless hours helping the team make things happen.

Another element key to the team’s success is a strong supportive community that has emerged since their beginning in 2013. Maureen Robertson, Sisters for Life spokesperson explains “This community believes we can make a difference – and we are making a difference!! Together we have raised over $276,000 with a goal of reaching $300,000+ this year!

This year Sisters for Life are excited to be assisting four diverse programs in 2025. Cornwall Community Hospital will be receiving assistance to help with the purchase of a mammography injector which will support local patients and help avoid trips to Ottawa for contrast- enhanced digital mammograms.

Next the team will be providing funding to the Canadian Cancer Trials Group through the Canadian Cancer Society. This group was created in 1980, and their trials program has resulted in major lifesaving breakthroughs in breast, colorectal, blood, lung, ovarian, brain and prostate cancer.

The Wheels of Hope Transportation Program (Canadian Cancer Society) will also be receiving funding. This program provides transportation to vulnerable community members who need transportation to their cancer appointments. In 2024, Wheels of Hope supported 105 patients in Cornwall, SDG and Prescott Russell, providing 1679 trips to appointments. All of this was done by 18 volunteer drivers.

The SFL Team is once again supporting Ronald McDonald House in Ottawa — a place that provides a “home away from home” for families whose children are receiving care at CHEO. In 2024 alone, the House supported 21 families from the Cornwall and SD&G area, providing 592 nights of comfort. Funds raised from this year’s gala will support the House’s meal programming, including the Grab ’n Go Snacks Program and Home for Dinner Program, which help ensure families have nourishing meals and snacks available when they need them most.
