Nearly 350 volunteers are needed to help fill gaps in our area.

Non-profit organizations and community groups who are actively recruiting volunteers will gather in one place on November 27 to encourage potential volunteers to join their ranks.

This event, the first of its kind in Cornwall, is open to anyone who would like to share their skills and time with groups in need.

“With nearly 40 booths registered, we know there’s a need for volunteers in Cornwall and area,” said Carilyne Hebert, executive director of the Social Development Council. “Together they are seeking almost 350 volunteers, and we hope this fair helps meet that need.”

It all takes place on Wednesday, November 27 at the Cornwall Civic Complex Salons from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

Among the participating groups is Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall & District, which matches mentors with young boys and girls.

“We have so many children on our waiting list,” said Kelsey Jeaurond, a caseworker with BBBS. “We’re hoping that there are potential volunteers out there who have time and attention to devote to kids in need.”

Also seeking volunteers is Encore Education, a program offering learning experiences for adults over 50.

“If you have specific knowledge or experience to share, we want to hear about it,” Dorothy Forrester, President of Encore. “There’s increasing demand for unique learning opportunities, and we’re hopeful that volunteers will sign up to offer lessons.
