The City is thrilled to announce the return of the annual Trash to Treasure event, slated for June 1-2, aimed at reducing waste and promoting sustainability through community engagement. This initiative invites residents to participate in a unique weekend dedicated to turning unwanted household items into valuable resources for others, fostering a spirit of sharing and environmental responsibility.

Cornwall, ON – Seaway Senior Citizens Club is gearing up for another busy Fall with a wide variety of activities, classes, programs, and special events geared to those fifty plus in the Cornwall / Akwesasne area.

The event will kick off on Saturday, June 1, with a community-wide yard sale where participants can sell or exchange gently used goods that they no longer need. This day not only helps residents declutter their homes but also provides a chance to find treasures in their neighbors’ former belongings.

On Sunday, June 2, the focus shifts to a giveaway day, allowing residents to set out items they wish to donate, free of charge, to anyone interested in taking them. This part of the event emphasizes the joy of giving and encourages the repurposing of items, which might otherwise end up in landfills.

Important Rules and Guidelines

To ensure the event runs smoothly and safely, the city has set specific guidelines. Notably, items such as mattresses, hazardous waste, and food are not permitted to be set out for giveaway due to health and safety concerns. Participants are urged to bring in any items not taken by 7 p.m. on each event day to avoid littering and potential fines.

Unclaimed items should be considered for donation to local thrift stores or taken to the landfill at 2590 Cornwall Centre Road to ensure they are disposed of responsibly.

Participation and Resources

Residents interested in participating in Trash to Treasure can sign up online at the provided link. Additionally, physical maps indicating registered yard sale and giveaway locations are available at City Hall. These maps can also be viewed online through the links for registered yard sale locations and giveaway spots, enabling treasure hunters to plan their routes and maximize their weekend experience.

The Trash to Treasure event exemplifies the city’s commitment to sustainability and community building. By encouraging the reuse and proper disposal of household items, the city aims to foster a culture of environmental consciousness and community cooperation. Residents are encouraged to join in this communal effort to reduce waste and find new homes for their unused items, turning one person’s trash into another community member’s treasure.
