Toronto, May 14, 2024 – The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation, and Parks of Ontario, led by Minister Andrea Khạnjin, celebrated a significant milestone today with the fifth annual Provincial Day of Action on Litter. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to addressing litter and preserving the natural beauty of Ontario.
“Today is the fifth annual Provincial Day of Action on Litter: a significant milestone in our government’s ongoing efforts to tackle litter and preserve the natural beauty of our province,” said Minister Khạnjin.
Over the past five years, Ontario has seen a robust engagement from various sectors of the community, including students, community groups, municipalities, and businesses. These groups have organized numerous litter cleanups and promoted the critical message of maintaining clean neighbourhoods, parks, and waterways. The annual campaigns have reached over three million people on social media, inspiring hundreds to participate in community cleanups across the province.
Minister Khạnjin extended her gratitude to all participants, emphasizing the positive impact they have made on their communities and the environment. “Thank you all for doing your part to make a positive impact on your community and your environment,” she said.
The government’s commitment goes beyond mere words; it has invested over $2.4 million in community-based projects in collaboration with partners such as Pollution Probe, Boating Ontario Association, and Toronto Region Conservation Authority. These projects include shoreline cleanups and the installation of preventive plastic capture devices at marinas.
“From the shores of the Great Lakes to the forests of Algonquin Park, Ontario is home to some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the world,” Khạnjin remarked. “As a mother, I want all children in this province to grow up in a clean and healthy environment, and feel empowered to take action to preserve it for generations to come – which is exactly what this campaign is all about.”
On this Day of Action on Litter, Minister Khạnjin urged everyone to gather with family, friends, and neighbours to pick up litter, contributing to cleaner communities. “Together, we can help keep land and waterways clean, contributing to a healthier province, both today and in the future,” she concluded.
Participants are encouraged to share their efforts on social media using the hashtag #actONlitter. For more information, resources like the Litter Cleanup Guide and insights into the impacts of litter and waste on the environment are available.
