Taking it Outside: Local Youth Investigate Art for Public Spaces

Cornwall, ON- August 20, 2024 – The Cline House Gallery is thrilled to announce a special four-day art program from August 20- 23, 2024, with renowned interdisciplinary artist Emily Rose Michaud of Gatineau, QC.  The program titled, “Introduction to Land Art and Projects for Public Spaces” invites local youth to explore the dynamic intersection between art, nature and public space.  This innovative program is made possible through the City of Cornwall’s “Building Safer Communities” fund, awarded by the Public Safety of Canada and managed by the Social Development Council of Cornwall and Area.

Emily Rose Michaud, know for her work at the crossroads of community organization, ecology and civic participation, will guide participants through an immersive artistic journey, inspiring young artists to think beyond gallery spaces.

This residency offers an introduction to street art and land art, encouraging bourgeoning artists to engage with outdoor environments and public spaces. The program includes walking tours around the neighbourhood to inspire a new perspective on the everyday environment, followed by hand on projects in the studio using a variety of media such as drawing, cyanotype, street installations and more.

“How can our studio creations transform public spaces? How can art re-shape our environment and create dialogue about its relationship with the land?”  These are just some of the questions that will be explore during the residency. Participants will have the opportunity to delve into the poetic, political, and environmental aspects of art while developing skills in creative thinking, communication, and creation.

The residency will culminate in a public exhibition on Friday August 23 from 2-3pm at the Cline House Studio. The exhibition will showcase the individual and collaborative art created during the program, offering the public a chance to witness the creativity and vision of the next generation of artists. All are welcome to visit the showcase.

Emily Rose Michaud, who holds a BFA from Concordia University and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Ottawa, has exhibited nationally and is known for her environmental and participatory art projects.  Her approach to art is rooted in producing works that uplift and inspire action toward the common good.
