Teen suicide is an issue that not only affects us here in Canada but globally. Teen suicide is actually the second leading cause of death among young adults. Girls attempt suicide twice as much as boys, however boys die from suicide four times as often. Looking at these statistics, I think the first question we’d ask ourselves is, where are these statistics coming from or even what could be the cause? Well, I’ll be going over the different causes that could result in an adolescence ending their own life.
Teen Suicide is caused by numerous reasons rather than a single one. Trauma, social life, media and home life can affect the individual’s mental health. During teen years, changes begin to appear, their bodies are changing, they become more opinionated and the people around them begin to change as well.
Most people get overwhelmed by these changes and this can result in feelings of anxiety. Instead of seeking help, they view suicide as a more reasonable and permanent end to the pain they’re feeling. That’s why in my opinion, adolescent years are the years parents should pay attention more often to their kids and speak with them often and overall, just be an adult they can trust.
Big changes at home can be hard too. For example newly divorced parents, fighting at home and previous or current abuse. When these big events happen it’s important that you guide your child through the change and show them how to adapt and again, you have to do what’s best for their well being. Don’t stay in places where you know you or your child is being abused, try and seek help in order to walk away from it.
Well now that I’ve explained the factors that lead to suicide the next thing we need to ask is how do we spot those who want to commit?
When someone wants to commit suicide they will give what is called warning signs which are just subtle or large changes in their behavior.
- Withdrawal from family or friends
- Neglect of hygiene
- Change of sleep or eating patterns
- Giving away possessions
- Indirect or direct statements about suicide
