Summer was, and now autumn is.
We are now coming into one of the most beautiful seasons of the year. This year, summer, with its intense heat and high humidity, might have prevented you from really enjoying your time outside. Some people love the heat and humidity. As for myself, while I can bear it, I much prefer the cooler temperatures. Autumn allows you to sleep with the windows open, breathe the fresh air, and wear a sweater (I enjoy sweaters) and then remove it as the day warms.
I look forward to the coolness of the nights, and the magnificent colours that come with this wonderous season.
If you like group outings, there are many groups in our area who seek to enjoy the outdoors — groups like the CMHA’s Wellness Walks. If you are more solitary by nature, then you can go out on your own and fill your senses with the sounds and beauty of nature.
A short trip west on Hwy 2 brings you to the bird sanctuary. Walk around, or stand still to feed the chickadees, inhale the musky dampness of the forest around you, and listen to the great outdoors. Take off your shoes and walk in the grass, and feel the earth beneath you, grounding you. Coupled with the sights and sounds of the birds and other creatures, you are filled with wonder.
Other places to explore are the Glengarry Trails, Cooper’s Marsh, the Summerstown Trails and, of course, the waterfront, always a good choice, all the aforementioned great places to go and spend time with others … or with yourself.
Our area of Ontario is blessed with so many opportunities to get out and explore, places that calm the spirit. Without the crowds and the incessant noise, being able to slow down, even for a short time is, literally, a few steps away.
Giving your body and your mind a break — a vital opportunity to renew yourself — is the privilege we have at our doorstep. The great outdoors quietly awaits you. Bring water for you and seeds for the birds … they will love you for it. If you are one of the many that has a phone that takes amazing photos, bring it along but turn the phone off. You’ll get amazing selfies with the creatures who inhabit the world that surrounds you. Then you can bring home memories that will warm you when the weather gets colder.
