A Möbius strip is one continuous strip with no beginning or end. Although it looks like it has a front and a back, both sides are actually connected as one continuous surface. A few days ago, I was in school when my math teacher told me about this strip, and I was just amazed at the concept of no beginning and no end. The idea that something could appear to have two sides but actually be one continuous surface was so interesting to me. What began as a random lesson in math made me think about life. We often separate success and failure, treating them as complete opposites, when in reality, they can be connected in ways we don’t always realize.
Success is subjective and depends on who you ask, but in general, people associate it with achieving their goals and dreams. We often view it as the opposite of failure, as if the two exist on completely different sides of a line. Almost two years ago, I applied for the position of Student Trustee for the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, and unfortunately, that year was not in the books for me. I did consider that a failure at the time. Looking back, however, I can see how that experience opened the door to opportunities I might not have had otherwise. I became involved with the Cornwall Youth Ambassador Committee, researched Parkinson’s disease in memory of my grandfather, and presented my work at regional and national science fairs. Through cadets, I also grew as a leader, earning a promotion to Master Warrant Officer and receiving the Lord Strathcona Medal. I can’t know how things would have turned out if I had been selected, but I wonder whether I would have had the same time and opportunities to grow in these other areas of my life.
The most unexpected part was that, like a Möbius strip, I eventually found myself back where I had started. The opportunity came around again, but this time, I was a different person. It was past midnight, and I had been working on schoolwork before lying down. As I reflected on the opportunities I had taken, the activities I had become involved in, and the lessons I had learned, I picked up my phone to set my alarm for the next morning. That’s when I noticed a message from my guidance counsellor. The Student Trustee position had opened again for the 2026–2027 term. I couldn’t believe it. After almost two years, the opportunity I had once lost was suddenly in front of me again; it felt like a full-circle moment. Soon after, the election took place. I gave my speech, but this time, I wasn’t the same person who had applied almost two years earlier. The experiences I had gained, the challenges I had faced, and the people I had met had shaped how I approached the opportunity. I was elected as Student Trustee.
What I learned through this experience is that failure and success aren’t always as separate as we make them out to be. What I once saw as a failed attempt became a part of the journey that led me back to the same opportunity, but as a different person. The experiences I had in between shaped me, taught me, and prepared me in ways I couldn’t have understood at the time. Maybe I wasn’t meant to get the position two years ago, not because I wasn’t capable, but because I still had more to experience and learn. In a way, that’s what makes the Möbius strip so fascinating to me. What looks like two separate sides is actually one continuous surface. And maybe success and failure are much the same: not opposite ends, but connected parts of the same journey.
