A few weeks ago, the annual UCSF Science Fair took place at St. Lawrence High School on a Saturday morning. I decided to participate this year with my project, Quantifying Tremor Activities in Parkinson’s Disease Using Motion Sensors. The night before the event, we set up our projects for judging, and that’s when I had the chance to walk around and take everything in. As I moved through the space, looking at each display, I felt a sense of hope, ambition, and inspiration. Seeing the range of ideas and effort put into each project made me realize just how talented the youth in Cornwall truly are.
From the colourful poster projects createdby students in Grades 1–5 to the detailed research and experiments presented by students in Grades 6–12, it became clear that this was more than just an event. It was a glimpse into the future of Cornwall. Standing there, surrounded by these projects, I realized I was looking at the work of future doctors, engineers, pilots, and innovators, all coming from right here in our community.
The science fair is not just about experiments, but about exposing students to career paths, including the growing need for doctors in Canada. As the demand for healthcare professionals continues to rise, especially with an aging population and increasing health needs, it is important to spark interest in medical and science-related fields early on. Science fairs encourage students to explore topics related to health, biology, and human systems, helping them see the impact they could have in the future. These experiences build the curiosity, critical thinking, and dedication needed in careers like medicine. By giving youth opportunities to engage with science in meaningful ways, events like science fairs can inspire the next generation of doctors and healthcare workers that Canada will rely on in the years to come.
Through science, students develop skills that go far beyond the classroom. It encourages curiosity and critical thinking, allowing youth to explore topics that affect problems in the real world, including those related to health and wellness. Through the process, students learn how to manage their time, handle stress, and work through challenges, which supports both their mental and personal growth. Presenting their projects also builds confidence and communication skills, helping them express ideas clearly and effectively. In Cornwall, events like the science fair bring the community together and highlight the potential of local youth, showing that they are capable of making meaningful contributions. Participating in such events helps students gain not only knowledge but also the wisdom and independence needed for their future. Investing and promoting such events will lead to a stronger, healthier, and more successful Cornwall later.
