Hi gang! I’m Stacey Case, aka the Pizza Freak, with another instalment of Eats & Deets! Lots going on food-wise in Cornwall and SDG, so let’s dig in.
First – some gossip. The owners of Carnie’s (the old location of Olympic Pizza on Pitt) have successfully received all permits needed to work on the building! The parking lot is finished, and next they’re framing in the new kitchen. That means we are mere months away from their delicious blooming onions. All the yes! They’ll even be firing up the original Olympic Pizza pizza oven, and the original owners of Olympic have shared their family recipes! What will the new tomato sauce be like? Will there be bbq chicken and delicious gravy? Only time will tell…
In other news, I spent the last month being an Ambassador for the United Way’s Ultimate Burger Battle. I’d like to focus on a place that I have driven past a hundred times, but never stopped in. It’s on Highway 2, just east of Morrisburg. It’s a permanent, red and white painted chip stand attached to a house. It is now called Goldmynes. A young Jamaican woman named Alishia owns it. She is a Master Smoker, at a competition level. She smokes ribs, the smoked jerk burger that she entered in the United Way contest was unbelievable, and to top it off, her fried chicken is the best I have had since I moved to Cornwall five years ago. Her chicken breading spice blend is aces. Just aces. No heat at all, just familiar flavours presented in a delicious new way. Somehow the chicken meat retains the spices from the breading, and the total package can’t be beat. 9.7/10.
Finally, I have been compiling an exhaustive list of every mom and pop pizzeria in Cornwall and SDG, going even further to Brockville in the west, to Valleyfield QC in the east, to the bottom of Ottawa, and even into the Ottawa Valley. Guys, this list is insane. My initial goal was to somehow review them all, which is still a goal, but it just might take me a year or two, because I’ve found over SIXTY mom and pops. People really love their pizza here! I’ll be travelling to Embrun this Saturday for my first visit to the recently opened Rust Belt Pizza – they’re doing Detroit style AND Chicago style AND Tavern style AND classic cheese on top style! I’m going with three friends and we’re each ordering one of the four pies, and then sharing them all. Wicked!
Food isn’t just something you eat. It’s relaxing with friends. It’s fond memories. Its comforting. I hope you try some great food this month! See you next time!
