2024 was a year full of memorable events that showcased the energy, diversity, and talent within SDG and Akwesasne. From cultural celebrations to sports and community initiatives, here’s a look back at the top 10 events that left their mark this year, as compiled by some of our writers:

1. Cornwall Waterfest Dragon Boat Races

As Sylvie O’Rourke so eloquently shared, “The event that stood out for me in 2024 was the Cornwall Waterfest Dragon Boat Races. As a water sports enthusiast, I enjoyed spending the day watching teams compete on the canal. The participants’ intensity in staying synchronized as they paddled was riveting.” This annual event on the Cornwall Canal celebrated teamwork, endurance, and fun, with the added excitement of vendors, music, and a lively family-friendly atmosphere.

2. Ribfest Cornwall

Ribfest 2024 brought the heat—and the flavor—to Lamoureux Park. With national ribbers and local food vendors serving up mouthwatering BBQ, it was a feast for the senses. As Julia Lucio reminds us, this event remains one of Cornwall’s most beloved summer highlights, complete with live music and a fun, festive vibe that kept attendees coming back all weekend long.

3. World Juniors Hockey Games

Cornwall proudly hosted two games of the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship, an event that was a clear favorite for our writer Mateo Lucio. “The atmosphere was electric,” he said. “Watching such high-caliber talent on home ice was an unforgettable experience.” Fans packed the Ed Lumley Arena to cheer on international teams, creating a historic moment for the city’s sports community.

4. Akwesasne Powwow

The 2024 Akwesasne Powwow celebrated the rich heritage and traditions of the Mohawk Nation, which our writer Louise Mignault enjoyed. With captivating dance performances, powerful drumming, and storytelling, attendees were immersed in Indigenous culture. Delicious traditional cuisine and unique handcrafted goods added to the vibrancy of this cherished annual event.

5. Men’s Mental Health Summit

The Men’s Summit on Mental Health stood out as one of the most impactful events of the year. Writer Ian Bowering praised it as “the best organized, and most profound event I have attended in more than 40 years.” Led by Stephen Douris and Ivan Labelle, who also write for us, the summit provided a safe and meaningful space to address male depression and mental health. Its success left many hoping for a return in 2025.

6. Cornwall Santa Claus Parade and Breakfast with Santa

The streets of Cornwall came alive in December with the annual Santa Claus Parade. Dazzling floats, festive music, and Santa himself delighted attendees of all ages. Earlier in the day, families enjoyed the Optimist Club’s Breakfast with Santa, making it a magical day filled with holiday cheer and community spirit.

7. Seaway Valley Theatre Company’s 2024 Season

The Seaway Valley Theatre Company captivated audiences throughout 2024 with an exciting lineup of plays and musicals. Featuring local talent and a mix of comedies and dramas, the season brought laughter, tears, and applause to the region’s thriving arts scene.

8. Alexandria Glengarry Highland Games

The Glengarry Highland Games once again showcased the region’s proud Scottish heritage. From lively piping competitions and traditional dancing to the iconic caber toss, this year’s event attracted visitors from near and far. The games continue to be a cultural highlight in Alexandria. It is also one of Mai-Liis’ favourites.

9. Jamie Heath’s Blues Party at Rurban Brewing

Blues lovers were thrilled when Rurban Brewing’s Tap Room hosted Jamie Heath’s “Blues Party” in 2024. Writer Ian Bowering raved about the experience, saying, “Rurban’s Tap Room replicates the intimacy of Irish pubs, providing the perfect atmosphere for music, conversation, and of course beer!” With world-class blues and locally brewed craft beer, this event was a highlight for music enthusiasts across the region.

10. Festival Afro Diversity

The Festival Afro Diversity brought a celebration of multiculturalism and African heritage to the region. This vibrant event featured music, dance, art, and food from diverse cultures, creating a space for unity and learning. Of course, there was so much more than this. From cultural traditions and sporting events to community celebrations, 2024 was a year to remember in SDG and Akwesasne. These events brought people together, celebrated local talent, and showcased the unique character of the region. Here’s to another exciting year in 2025!
