Cornwall Launches Youth Ambassador Program to Engage Students in Local Government

On September 22, Council unanimously approved the Cornwall Youth Ambassador Program, an initiative that will bring together students from each participating high school in Cornwall to act as representatives of their community.

Mayor Justin Towndale introduced the motion to strike the initiative, focused on updating the former Youth Advisory Committee, with the goal of actively engaging youth in municipal activities and encouraging their participation in local government decision-making processes.

“If we can get youth engaged and interested in municipal politics and municipal affairs, it’s a win for everybody. I look forward to the start of this once again,’’ said Mayor Justin Towndale.

The Cornwall Youth Ambassador Program will be made up of one student from each of the high schools within the city limits – Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School, St. Lawrence Secondary School, St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School, École secondaire catholique La Citadelle, and École secondaire publique L’Héritage, as well as from neighbouring from Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School – and must be nominated by the principal or vice principal of the school.

“We’re truly pleased that youth voices in our community will be heard, and we hope their engagement will provide meaningful feedback and have a positive influence on municipal matters,” added Denise Labelle-Gelinas, Interim City Clerk.

Key responsibilities will include attending a one-day youth summit, which will begin with a visit to City Hall, and then to other municipal facilities. But the day’s full agenda will, fittingly, be worked on by the youth.

“As a former member of the original Youth Advisory Committee, I am thrilled to see this initiative return and evolve,” said Katherine Wells, Director of Communications, Government Relations and Strategic Planning. “It’s important for us to connect directly with youth and actively involve them in shaping the program itself.”

Ambassadors will also have the opportunity to present a delegation to Council, participate in community events, and welcome a visit from the Mayor and Councillors at their schools, underscoring a commitment to meaningful youth engagement in municipal matters.

The program will be administered by the Clerk’s department, with student leaders participating for a one-year term.

The creation of the Cornwall Youth Ambassador Program aligns closely with the City’s strategic priorities by fostering youth engagement, leadership, and inclusion in municipal decision-making.
