Staycations are where it’s at this year—and honestly, your wallet will be breathing a sigh of relief. With the eye-watering cost of gas trickling down into trains, planes, and automobiles, staying close to home is starting to feel less like a compromise and more like a genius life hack.
So why not become a tourist in your own backyard? If you live in or around Cornwall, you’re already sitting on a surprisingly great vacation hub. Craving a beach day? You’ve got several sandy options within a short drive—no airport security line required, and no one judging how many snacks you packed “just in case.” Prefer something a little more rustic? Camping nearby lets you reconnect with nature… and rediscover just how loud a mosquito can actually be.
If your ideal getaway includes shopping bags instead of sleeping bags, spend a day exploring SD&G and beyond. Thrifting, golfing, swimming, or simply catching up with friends can feel like a mini escape when you give yourself permission to unplug from your usual routine. Add in a leisurely lunch on a patio or by the water at one of the area’s many fantastic restaurants, and suddenly you’re living your best “vacation mode” life—no passport required.
Feeling a bit more adventurous? There are countless charming small towns within a few hours’ drive that offer unique shops, local eats, and scenic views—without the “I need a second mortgage” price tag. It turns out you don’t need to cross oceans to find something new; sometimes you just need to cross a county line.
If you’re a reader, I simply can’t resist suggesting a literary adventure: spend a day hunting down the Little Free Libraries scattered around Cornwall and beyond. Think of it as a treasure hunt—minus the pirates, plus the occasional dog-eared paperback with a mysterious past. You never know what you’ll find: a gripping novel, a quirky memoir, or that one book everyone swore you had to read five years ago. Best of all? It’s completely free, delightfully unpredictable, and the only baggage you’ll be carrying home is a great vacation read (or three, no judgment).
And here’s a fun fact: Canadians are actually among the top domestic travelers in the world, with a significant portion of trips taken within their own province. In fact, before international travel became the norm, exploring local landscapes—from coastlines to cottage country—was the original Canadian vacation tradition. We’re just bringing it back, one patio lunch at a time.
So go ahead—dust off your sense of adventure, grab a tank of gas (gently), and rediscover the magic close to home. Your budget—and your sanity—will thank you.
That’s my story-what’s yours?
