It may only be November, but many people are considering how to prepare their home for the festive season. Christmas can creep up on you if you leave preparations for December.

This is especially true if you’re looking to buy new Christmas decor for your home. Many people do tend to reuse their decor year-on-year, but it is good to refresh what you own every so often. If you are unsatisfied with how your home has looked over Christmas in the past, you should definitely be looking for some new ideas.

Of course, this is easier said than done. Decorating your home for the holidays without it looking tacky is a tricky balance to achieve. Here are some tips for classy holiday decor.

Use Neutral Colors

The tackiest Christmas decor tends to be the brightest. While red and green can look incredible when used well, it is tough to do it with subtlety. It is reminiscent of the most capitalistic aspects of Christmas, as it is exactly what you’ll see in stores across the country (and the world). But what can you use instead?

Neutral colors are perfect for Christmas. Your home decor can give off the feel of a walk in a forest, with trees lightly covered in snow. Muted browns and cream colors are classy and subtle and will elevate the look of your home.

Use Nature

Along the same lines, using natural elements will take your cozy look even further. By bringing actual plants into your home, you create an outside environment without being exposed to the elements. Bringing the outside in is always a wonderful design trend that never gets old. It is an affordable way of making your home feel both bigger and classier.

While we spend a lot of the Christmas season indoors, the tree always connects us to the great outdoors, and Nativity scenes tend to play into this. Using this principle to decorate your home allows you to indulge in the season’s excesses without it appearing tacky.

Use Metallics to Add Sparkle

No matter how classy you wish to be, Christmas needs a bit of sparkle. This often leads to decisions to add bright lights and glitter. However, you can achieve a touch of class while adding sparkle by using metallics. Gold in particular is a great element to use in your home decor.

Silvers reflect the light, which increases the sense of Christmas sparkle. You can also use burnished metals to add to the feel without losing the subtlety of your design.

Candles

Christmas decor would not be complete without candles. Candles are an item that can be done to excess without making your home look tacky. As long as you go for candles in muted colors, with subtle scents that combine well, they will elevate the look of your home. You can take the opportunity to dim the light so that the decor gets subtle lighting from the flames.

Christmas decor does not have to look tacky. You can enjoy decorating your home without going overboard on the greens and reds. The above ideas will help you achieve a balanced, classy look.
