Happy May, everyone! As we embrace this lovely month, I’m excited to address a question I’m sure many of you have asked before: How do I keep my plants happy this spring?

“Spring has arrived, and I’m eager to fill my garden and home with plants! However, every year I start strong and somehow end up with a few sad, wilting victims. What’s the secret to keeping plants healthy and thriving?” — Hopeful Gardener

First, don’t be too hard on yourself. Plants are living things, and like us, they have good days and bad days! The key to success starts with understanding what each plant needs.

Sunlight is your first major consideration. Some plants love basking in full sun (think tomatoes and sunflowers), while others prefer a shady nook (like ferns and hostas). Always check the plant tag, research additional information about the plant, or ask at one of us at your harvest garden center for advice.

Next is watering. It’s easy to over love your plants! Many people tend to over water, which can lead to root rot. A good rule of thumb is to stick your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, it’s time to water; if it’s still damp, hold off. Don’t wait until the pot feels feather-light.

Don’t forget about the soil! Healthy, nutrient-rich soil makes a world of difference. If you’re planting in pots, ensure you’re using a quality potting mix. For garden beds, mix in compost once or twice a year to improve soil health.

Lastly, give your plants some breathing room. Crowding can lead to poor air circulation and attract pests and diseases. Spacing is more important than you might think! With a little observation and plenty of patience, you’ll soon be surrounded by healthy, happy plants. Remember, every gardener learns through trial and error. Enjoy the journey and Happy planting!

If you have gardening questions or need advice, feel free to reach out! You can send your questions to me at [email protected] with the subject line “Ask Anna,” and I’ll happily feature your questions in next month’s NewsMagazine.
