Hi there! Welcome to another instalment of Eats & Deets. I’m Stacey Case, your fearless restaurant reviewer! I recently starred in a television show about Cornwall Pizza, called Cheese On Top, coming soon to Bell Fibe TV1 from Manitoba to Labrador on cable, and everywhere online. I have a Facebook page for myself as The Pizza Freak, where I review pizzerias all over Ontario and Quebec. But you know what? One of my favourites in right here in Cornwall! It’s Philo’s, at the end of Pitt downtown.
The first time I went to Philo’s was soon after I had moved here in 2022. There aren’t many sit down restaurants serving Cornwall Pizza, made in the Greek style with the cheese on top of the toppings. Upon entering, I was struck by how huge Philo’s is inside, and by how many booths there are. I love booths! They’re overly padded here, and extremely comfortable.
When I was still drinking (seven weeks sober as of this writing!), Philo’s was an obvious choice for supper, because they serve Pabst Blue Ribbon draft, in actual PBR mugs with handles! Now that is how you serve a beer. Philo’s is my Number One Restaurant to bring visitors to, that are curious about trying Cornwall Pizza. I know the owners, and they are the first to admit that their pizza isn’t as thick as other pizzerias here, but I don’t care. It’s all about the atmosphere and presentation. Philo’s has class. I’ve gone on a Friday night and witnessed them serving 75 member hockey leagues. Kids birthday parties with upwards of fifty people. All while serving all of the other tables quickly and efficiently. My last visit was with two old friends who were visiting Montreal. Scotty was the drummer in my first punk band, and Allie is his partner. I convinced the two of them to come visit me and try Cornwall Pizza. It was a great experience!
The restaurant was packed to the gills. We were only a table of three, but we were always looked after. I told the two of them that Cornwall Pizza isn’t regular pizza – a medium six-slice would be enough for the three of us. They looked doubtful. After getting our soft drinks we ordered a pepperoni, mushroom and olive pizza. The place was really hopping, but we were served our food quickly, and it looked amazing. Thick, but not crazy thick. Cheese on top. Tasty, tomatoey sauce, and enough of it on the pie, too. We loved the amount of olives and the thinly sliced pepperoni. They couldn’t believe two slices per person was enough, but we know differently, don’t we, Cornwall? If you haven’t been to Philo’s, or it’s been a while, what are you waiting for?
