Learning any new language is undoubtedly a challenging job. But this job becomes dull over time with the stuffy grammar books and boring language classes. But watching movies in English is a fun and effective way to improve your skills and will help you grow skills like a native speaker’s teachers .

Movies are especially helpful in improving listening skills and also help to enrich your vocabulary. This can work as your very own online English course, a class that you can customize the way you want.

Obviously, this doesn’t require any routine, books that you dislike, it’s basically all you. Here are 6 movies that will help you improve your listening skills in English.

1.   My Fair Lady (1964)

This Award-winning musical is about a determined and overconfident English professor who takes upon a working-class girl and teaches her language skills and ways to fit into the high-class society. Together they form an unlikely duo and engage in unexpected situations. If you are a fan of movies then this classic is a must-watch for you and you are sure to love this fun, charming, romantic film. Besides this film is great for learning words that enrich your vocabulary, and the plot here partially focuses on improving language skill and listening skills. So, doesn’t it sound like the film for you?

2.   The Sound of Music (1965)

This timeless classic is based on the life of the world-famous Von Trapp Family singers. The film tells the story of an aspiring nun Julie who is sent to take care of seven parentless children. She fills their lives with love and song and unexpectedly falls in love too. This inspiring film teaches us to love ourselves and our lives through an impeccable musical tour. Here the words in the dialogue aren’t anything overly complicated and the actress Julie Andrews speaks very clearly and enunciate every word she speaks. These two qualities are particularly great to improve your listening skills.

3.   Mary Poppins (1964)

Disney’s all-time favorite musical/drama film “Mary Poppins,” tells the story of a nun Mary Poppins who is hired by a working father to take care of his malevolent children. Mary changes the life of these two kids with the power of her magic. This film teaches the importance of parents in their children’s lives and also the importance of family. Again, this is a children’s film, so the words used here are pretty easy going so it’s not much hard for the viewers to catch the English here. So even if you are a beginner, we recommend you watch this movie without subtitles.

4.   Forrest Gump (1994)

A film-lover or not, it’s really hard to find who hasn’t heard of this Award-winning masterpiece. The film tells the story of Forrest Gump, a man with a low IQ, he tells the story of his life to random strangers and now he just wants to see his childhood love, Jenny. Forrest unknowingly found himself among many historical events and made a successful man out of himself, but the most important lesson here is him being a good person. Forrest speaks in a Southern accent, so it is a great way to get introduced to a

new accent and learn different and diverse use of grammar through this wonderful film.

5.   The Lion King (1994)

This Disney classic is a childhood favorite to many and a film that takes a trip down memory lane. This tells the story of a young lion Simba whose father is killed at the hands of his wicked uncle Mufasa. Simba flees away from his own Kingdom and after becoming an adult he returns to dethrone his uncle Scar and win back the Kingdom. It’s not only a great movie for its plot but it also gives the English language. The words used here are easy to understand and also, it’s a good way to practice narrating a story and also to improve listening skills.

6.   The Social Network (2010)

Master director David Fincher’s modern-day masterpiece is based on the story of the                  millionaire Mark Zuckerberg’s student life at Harvard University back in the early 2000s. This tells the story of his deception with his friend Edwardo Saverin. The film has used particularly difficult words, like legal and technical terms, and very classy use of grammar. This is a great way to learn these words and improve your grammar and listening skills. To enjoy and learn from this film to the fullest be sure to watch it with the subtitles especially if you are a beginner.
