Everyone would like their rugs to stay fresh and clean, but sometimes accidents happen. That’s why machine washable rugs are designed to be easily washed in your washing machine, ensuring they always look their absolute best.

Did your pet have a little mishap? No need to stress. Spilled a glass of red wine? Not a problem at all. Having a rug that’s machine washable truly makes your life easy.

Washing your rug is actually quite simple, but we thought it would be helpful to gather some tips from The Rug District. They graciously shared their favorite washing techniques that have proven to be highly effective in keeping their rugs fresh and clean. Here’s what they had to say:

1: Pre-Treat Stains

Before tossing your rug into the washing machine, take a moment to pre-treat any stubborn stains. Use a stain remover or a mixture of gentle detergent and warm water. Gently blot the stain with a clean cloth or sponge, being careful not to rub too vigorously. This pre-treatment will help to lift the stain and ensure better results when you wash your rug.

2: Separate by Size

If you have multiple rugs to wash, it’s a good idea to separate them by size. This way, you can ensure that each rug gets ample space to move around in the washing machine, allowing for a more thorough cleaning. Avoid overstuffing the machine to prevent potential damage to your rugs or the machine itself.

3: Choose the Right Cycle

When selecting the washing cycle, opt for a delicate or gentle cycle to protect the fibers of your rug. Harsh cycles can cause unnecessary wear and tear. Additionally, consider using cold water instead of hot water, as hot water can shrink or distort certain rug materials.

4: Use a Mild Detergent

Using a mild, non-bleach detergent is essential to preserve the quality of your rug. Harsh chemicals can damage the fibers and colors. Check the manufacturer’s instructions or choose a detergent specifically designed for delicate fabrics. Avoid using fabric softeners or bleach, as they can leave residues or discolorations.

5: Protect Fringes and Tassels

If your rug has fringes or tassels, take extra care to protect them during the washing process. Gently tie them together with string or place them in a mesh laundry bag. This precaution prevents tangling and potential damage. Alternatively, consider hand-washing rugs with delicate embellishments to ensure their preservation.

6: Optimal Drying Techniques

After the wash cycle, it’s time to dry your rug properly. Avoid using a tumble dryer, as the heat and agitation can cause shrinkage or damage. Instead, lay your rug flat on a clean surface or hang it over a clothesline in a shaded area. Ensure good air circulation to facilitate drying. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause fading.

7: Regular Vacuuming

In between washes, it’s essential to maintain your rug’s cleanliness by regular vacuuming. This practice helps to remove dirt, dust, and debris that accumulate over time. Use a vacuum cleaner with a gentle brush attachment or a handheld vacuum for more delicate rugs. Be thorough, especially in high-traffic areas, to prevent the buildup of dirt.

8: Spot Clean as Needed

For small spills or localized stains, spot cleaning can be a quick and effective solution. Blot the affected area immediately with a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb as much liquid as possible. Then, use a mild detergent mixed with water to gently clean the spot. Always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the rug first to ensure it doesn’t cause any damage or discoloration. By following these tips, you can ensure that your machine washable rug stays fresh, clean, and beautiful for years to come. Happy washing!
