On Wednesday, January 24th, in celebration of Bell Let’s Talk Day, CMHA Champlain East held information sessions for the 7th and 8th grade classes at the Ecole Secondaire Catholique La Citadelle. About 200 students attended the event. Prizes were given out to the students who were able to correctly answer various mental-health related questions posed by the two mental health promoters, Angele D’Alessio and Genevieve Desrochers, from the CMHA. Student involvement was high. This year’s theme was MIND MATTERS.

During the presentation, the students heard from the school’s social worker, Mme. Chantal Charbonneau, who, in addressing the students, made them aware about where they can go for help. She reassured them that if they or another student they are concerned about needs help, that they are never alone. Angele and Genevieve gave the students information about not only about mental illness, but more importantly about mental health, providing with tips on how to help maintain it through exercise, being outside and healthy eating habits.

The students were also provided with Bell Let’s Talk posters and were asked to write a slogan or phrase on it showing hope. The one that struck me the most was one that I use often myself … I MATTER, because we all do. Thank you to all who participated … it was a great success.

Also on Wednesday, January 24th, Bell Let’s Talk presented CMHA Champlain East with a cheque for $20,000 to help encourage the conversation about Mental Health.

Note from the Seeker Team

Bell Let’s Talk began in 2010 and its aim is to encourage conversation about Mental Health and provide funding to Canadian organizations, large and small, to help in taking “action to create positive change for Mental Health in Canada”. After all, if you have a broken leg you fill seek help to get it fixed so if you are suffering from a Mental Health ailment, you also need treatment to get it fixed. We should not be embarrassed or scared to seek this help and treatment.
