I’ve been holding off on talking about this topic longer than I should have. I thought maybe there would be people that wouldn’t care or it wouldn’t be relevant or important to the people of Canada but I feel it’s important that I raise awareness to this issue. Canada is a country that shares many cultures, practices and history with the US. There are so many families and friends that cross the border. With these current ICE raids citizens in the US are left feeling unsafe. People of immigrant status are being detained and dealt with using brute force. Videos are circling the internet of ICE agents manhandling and tackling innocent people.
More often than not the innocent people being detained are legal immigrants but were simply victims of racial profiling. A U.S citizen had been detained by ICE on her way to work, the agents put her down in such an inhumane and animalistic way as they dragged her through the street. She was later released after the agents checked her ID but shouldn’t that have been the thing that came first, this looks to me like she was another victim of racial profiling. This isn’t the first instance of this happening. In Minnesota a 23-year-old legal citizen Nasra Ahmed was arrested and detained by ICE for two days. ICE had her handcuffed, threw racial slurs at her and then proceeded to tackle her so hard she suffered from a concussion. In her interview she mentioned being detained with an INDIGENOUS WOMAN. They both cried as they held each other tight.
It isn’t just adults that are being affected by ICE though, it’s also youth that are suffering too. Young children are constantly afraid as they walk to school of being detained by ICE. Imagine not being able to walk safely in a place you call home. Imagine coming home and seeing your parents gone. Imagine being forced to watch as your parents are put down on the streets to be sent away from you forever. Most of these kids end in foster care or are forced to take on adult roles in order to keep their family together. Some children as young as four are forced to represent themselves in court due to their parents being deported without even a lawyer able to speak for them.
When asked in a 60 minutes interview “has it gone too far” President Trump replied “They haven’t gone far enough.”
In a 2024 interview Trump referred to immigrants as “animals”.
Even after all these paragraphs I haven’t even scratched the surface of the wrongs being done by ICE. We as a country value safety, diversity and human rights, so why do these values have to stop here, why do we prefer turning a blind eye to this rather than standing up for what’s right? As I’m writing this I know there is someone reading these tragedies with not an ounce of sympathy in their heart, so I say you are a horrible and wretched person. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
