Believe it or not, spring is on its way. You might still be stepping over snowbanks or bundling up against the cold, but before you know it the days will be longer, the air will feel softer, and your sleepy gardens will begin to wake up. The question is — are you ready?
As the snow melts and the first hints of green peek through, it’s time to shake off winter and give your garden the best possible start. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. A little preparation now goes a long way — and yes, it’s also the perfect excuse to pick up those colourful garden gloves.
Start with your tools: Before working the soil, check your tools and equipment. Clean and sterilize your pruners, look over the lawnmower and tiller, and make sure rechargeable tools are ready to go. Replace batteries if needed and make a quick list of supplies you may need this season. Your future self will be grateful when you’re not running to the store halfway through planting.
Tidy up and set the stage: Next comes cleanup. Wash out pots and planters, check raised beds for repairs, and think ahead about supports, cages, or trellises before plants start growing. Clear away fallen branches and debris, freshen up garden edges, and tidy pathways. A little effort now makes the whole yard feel new again.
Show your soil some love: Healthy gardens start from the ground up — literally. Turn the soil, mix in compost, and add fertilizer if needed. Think of it as feeding your garden before the busy growing season begins. Top off mulch around trees and garden beds to help keep moisture in and weeds under control.
Prune, divide, and refresh: Give your plants a spring haircut. Trim trees, remove dead branches, prune late-flowering shrubs, and divide overcrowded perennials. Keep an eye out for early weeds or insects trying to get a head start — it’s easier to deal with them now than later.
Get growing — yes, you still have time! If you haven’t started seedlings yet, don’t stress. There is still time to plant herbs, flowers, and vegetables. Gardening isn’t about perfection — it’s about learning, trying, and growing right along with your plants.
Keep track and keep it fun: Consider starting a simple garden journal. Write down what you plant, what works, and what doesn’t. You’ll thank yourself next season.
Most importantly, step outside and enjoy it. Take time to walk through your garden. Notice the changes, soak up the sunshine. and enjoy the process. Gardening isn’t just about the end result it’s about the moments in between. Because at the end of the day, life is really too short, not to get your hands, a little dirty and have some fun. Get out and grow !
