In this day in age responsible employers need to order and receive a DBS background check on their essential employees. But you may not know exactly how to do that, or why.

There are different levels of DBS background checks and each level is suitable for employees of different levels and responsibilities. This article will discuss the basics of ordering a DBS check and selecting the right one.

Check Out the Available DBS Options

There are three basic options when ordering a DBS background check. Those options are basic, standard, and extended.

The basic DBS background check is suitable for low-level employees of all varieties. This kind of check is best suited for employers who want to ensure a standard of quality in their workforce even though the workers do not bear a particularly large responsibility.

The standard is more extensive and details more information about criminal charges and their severity. This is suitable for people that work with disadvantaged populations in a supervised capacity. It’s easy to get DBS checks online, and failing to fulfill this obligation is inexcusable in this day and age. Finally, the extended DBS check is required for positions that have a lot of control over susceptible populations like children and the elderly. Doctors, therapists, teachers, and other social services positions require an extended DBS background check.

Determine Which Check Is Right for You

Consider the responsibility of the employee in question. Are they just a low-level workroom or will they be exerting control over the lives of others? If the workers are entry-level then the basic check is appropriate.

If you get a basic check and find one of your low-level employees has previous infractions, you may not receive enough information in the basic check. In that instance, you might want to consider ordering a standard DBS background check to find more detail about the specific nature of the charges and whether or not they are currently without legal issues. There is a lot of specific information available to help you know who needs a check and who doesn’t.

Acquire and Upload Requisite Paperwork

After you’ve determined the type of DBS check that you require, it’s time for you to accumulate the required materials. For most cases of DBS background checks, all that is required is a government-issued ID for the individual in question.

You’ll need to obtain a copy of the potential employee’s ID before you can complete a DBS background check. Once you have their ID information in hand, you are now able to apply online.

Pay the Fee and Wait

Now all you need to do is pay the fee and sit back and relax. A basic DBS check takes 3 to 5 days to return to you. Usually, it will just be an email report or a link to a web page that has all the information that you require. It may come with a printable PDF file as well.

Now that you’ve got all the information that you require, it’s time for you to have a look at what you found.

Carefully Analyze the Results

If you don’t know much about the law, it can be quite difficult to interpret the results. Make sure you’ve got a basic understanding of the different legal terms that are frequently used when talking about the law in the UK. The terms that you should consider are cautions, convictions, allegations, and penalties.

Now you know what you need to make an informed decision. This may also bring you peace of mind knowing that your employees are fit to work in the capacity in which they were hired.
