Safe Driving Basics

There are a lot of common things that you need to be doing as a driver. For starters, you should always keep at least one hand on the steering wheel. Of course, this also means that you should always keep your eyes on the road no matter what happens. YOur eyes and your hands are going to be your first safeguard against accidents.

It goes without saying that always keeping your seatbelt on is a good idea too. Just in case you do get into an accident, you are going to be able to prevent as much damage to your body as possible. These are just some of the basics that you should never forget, as doing so results in serious repercussions.

Drive Defensively

Defensive driving refers to a set of driving techniques and ideologies that teach you to avoid incoming traffic. This is one of the best ways to prevent yourself from getting involved in a car accident, as it’s a skill that lasts a lifetime. How does one learn how to drive defensively?

There are a lot of driving schools that teach defensive driving. It’s a good way to become a better driver. At the end of each course, you’ll receive a certificate or a diploma as proof of your completion of the course. Aside from keeping yourself safe, defensive driving can also help you get some huge discounts on insurance.

The 3-Second Rule

One of the most common types of accidents on the road is rear-ending. This happens when the front of your car hits the back of the car that’s in front of you. The 3-second rule is a good measurement of how far you should be from another car if you want to avoid this type of accident.

Basically, your car should always be 3-seconds behind the other driver; This way, you have 3 seconds to react if the car in front of you stops abruptly. Going over 3 seconds can be a bit of an overkill, but it doesn’t hurt to add a little bit more distance between you and other drivers.

Fully-Equip Your Car

There are a lot of car tools and gadgets that can make your car be safer on the road. FOr example, dashcams on the front and back give you a better view of what’s around your car. This will help you maintain a better driving distance from others as well.

Aside from that, you should also get better wheels that have great traction on the road regardless of what the weather condition is. These upgrades to your car might be a bit on the pricey side, but it’s far more affordable than car repairs and hospital bills.

Be Generous, Courteous, And The Better Person

The truth is that no one owns the road, and drivers need to keep this in mind. When you are driving, it’s best to always give way to others because that way, you can at least prevent accidents on your end. Try not to rush into traffic, do not cut, and most importantly, do not lose your cool.

Being the better person on the road does have a ton of benefits. If other riders aren’t going to be careful on the road, the least you can do is be a better person and stay leagues away from their poor practices. Believe it or not, the world can have fewer car crashes if people are just kinder.

Car accidents are a big headache, and they can also be something that you’ll regret for the rest of your life. It’s also something that you can never completely avoid, which is why the next best step is to always be a better driver instead. If you do get in an accident, always remember that medical and legal help are going to be important.
