Interesting title, indeed! What is it all about?
The 3-30-300 rule is an urban forestry guideline to improve health and sustainability. The 3 refers to having 3 trees visible from a resident’s home, school, or workplace. Take a pause, and consider your personal world. Are you able to view at least 3 trees from one of these locations, home, school, or work place? A proven health benefit is that increased exposure to green views is associated with lower levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. The 30 refers to 30% tree canopy cover in every neighbourhood. A minimum of 30% has been shown to reduce the urban heat island effect, improve air quality, and support mental health. The 300 meters is the distance to the nearest high-quality green space, possibly a park. Horovitz Park, in downtown Cornwall, is a delightful example. Studies have shown that while ‘3 trees in view’ is often achievable, achieving 30% canopy cover is the most challenging.
The City of Cornwall plants a wide variety of tree species during the spring and fall. Their web site also indicates that residents can request to have a specific type of tree planted on the municipal right-of-way. Despite the efforts of the City, much clear cutting takes place, and privately owned trees are being cut down frequently. The tree canopy of Cornwall falls much below the desirable 30%!

A mere six years ago, Tree Action Arbre, an action group of Transition Cornwall+, in partnership with both the City of Cornwall and the Cornwall Public Library, planted a Tiny Forest on the east side of the library. It is a joy to behold, particularly in the spring. Its tree canopy is most impressive.
Our group would like to continue to do our part to contribute to the tree canopy in the city. We are looking for interested parties with whom to partner to create another tiny forest. Tiny forests, as the name suggests, cover a small area intensely.
Might your place of business require some shade for the picnic table break area? Or is there an area for planting that will provide the employees that ‘3 trees view’, contributing to their mental health while at work? On the other hand, if you are a fine citizen of Cornwall that does a lot of walking and or wandering our streets, maybe you have noticed an area in need of a tiny forest.
Tree Action Arbre does not provide funding but would assist is seeking funding from various organizations. Advice on tree species, choice and design would be available, as well as support going forward.
Please send your ideas to: [email protected] We look forward to hearing from interested parties.
