Last month I wrote about my friend Troy opening up a carnival food-themed restaurant, Carnie’s. After some ups and downs, I am pleased to report, from Drake Cartier, Carnie’s owner, that he is working with a mechanical engineer now, and they are moving forward. Whew! That’s great news! I want one of their amazing bloomin’ onions so bad…
In restaurant news, I had a wonderful meal at Au Vieux Duluth a couple of weeks ago. My first time there, I had a steak, medium rare, that was grilled to perfection. The Greek potatoes were delicious – soft, tasty, and melt-in-your-mouth. The simple oil and vinegar dressing on the salad reminded me of my mother’s homemade. And the flavoured rice soaked up the beefy gravy. 8/10.
Which brings me to Pizza. Some of you may know me as the Pizza Freak, a food blogger and star of an upcoming tv show all about Cornwall Pizza, called “Cheese On Top,” premiering on cable Thursday June 25 on Bell Fibe TV1, airing from Manitoba to Labrador. Too sweet! I search all over for new pizzerias to try, and I think I’ve found another winner.
The St. Lawrence Boulevard is a pub in Riverdale. I began going there this winter, every Sunday afternoon, to watch football, have a few drinks, and enjoy the food (provided gratis) made by regulars Gord and Roger. The horseshoe shaped bar is a favourite of mine in the city. On the wall is a sign offering food for sale. Typical bar food. And then there’s this: “Kim’s Pizza – $12.50.”

I never ordered it in all the time I’ve been going there. I’ve never seen anyone order it. Was it even real? It wasn’t until Linda, the manager of Lola’s, asked if I had ever tried it. I said No, and she smiled and said, “You really should. It’s like Spragues, in Massena NY.” Now, I have been told about Spragues for years, but I don’t currently travel to the States. I know, I know, I’m missing out.
I went to the Boulevard last week, and finally had one of Kim’s pies. A four slice, thin crust, meat lovers pizza, with hamburger, sausage and pepperoni. That’s the only style she makes. It was served looking pretty as a picture. First bite? Crunchy crust like I was used to from the US pizzas I would eat in Lewiston, Niagara Falls, and Buffalo New York, near where I grew up. A classic American ‘bar pie.’ Lots of cheese, great meats, I loved Kim’s pizza! I’m giving it a review of 8.6/10.
That’s my column this month – see if you can make it to the premiere of my tv show, in the auditorium of the Dev Centre, 7 pm on Thursday June 25. See you next time!
